Congratulations New Alumni

One of the largest senior classes in recent years graduated from Bexley High School on May 26, 2019. The 97th annual commencement ceremony featured student speakers, Annie Politi and Alexia Moore. Student Council President, Rose Thomas introduced Bexley alumna and Executive Director of The Columbus Museum of Art, Nannette Maciejunes, BHS ’71, who gave the keynote address.

Prior to turning their tassels, these seniors participated in the Senior Recognition Assembly held on Monday, May 20 which was immediately followed by the BEF sponsored Senior Celebration Day.

Over 75 students were recognized at the Senior Recognition Assembly in front of their parents and peers for their academic and athletic achievements, as well as service to the community and future military service. Over $60,000 in scholarships were awarded.

The Bexley High School Alumni Endowment funded two $1,000 Carlton Smith Memorial Scholarships and the $1,000 William E.L. Young Service Award. Scholarships awarded from BEF endowed funds established by alumni included:

  • The $1,000 Sandra Montgomery, Class of 55’, Memorial Scholarship
  • The $1,000 Barbara and Joseph Schwebel “Top Ten” Scholarship (new in 2019)
  • The two $1,000 Charles Hoel Memorial Science Prizes (Established in 2019 by Robert E. Stevenson, PhD, BHS Class of ‘44)

In honor of their teachers and coaches, the BHS Class of 1959 awarded three, $1,000 awards, for academics, athletics and leadership. A generous designated gift from alumnus, Alex Morton, BHS ‘08 provided four, $2,000 “Dream Big” scholarship awards. Gifts made to the Lions’ Pride Alumni Fund made possible a $250 cash award to each of the 11 seniors who was named the recipient of a departmental award or “cup.”

Following the awards assembly, seniors congregated on the high school’s football field to enjoy the third annual Senior Celebration Day. High winds took out the “human hamster balls” but did not deter those gathered from enjoying lunch from two food trucks, a sweet treat from Johnson’s Real Ice Cream, games and activities and “next step” group photos, including a group shot of the Class of 2019 in their new Bexley High School Alumni t-shirts.  To see more photos from Senior Celebration Day, visit www.bexleo.org/.
