Jerry Smeck ’50

Been away from Ohio since 1952 but remain a staunch Buckeye. Retired in 1995 and moved from San Jose, after 40 years, to Modesto, California in 1999. On a good day it’s about a one hour drive, but on a bad day, which is usual, it up to 2 1/2 hours; a total nightmare to drive into the Bay Area.  Don’t have much reason to go to The Bay now.  We sold our very beautiful 42 ft Sailboat about 8 years ago. The ocean is very unforgiving!! Enjoyed many years of San Francisco Bay sailing and out of the Golden Gate to Monterey, Half Moon Bay etc.–getting old sucks but we sure had a good time. We took up RV’ing also. Drove approximately 100,000 miles around the USA. So my life has not been boring.  We visited our family quite a few times in Columbus, Arlington and Canal Winchester, etc.  Nancy and I passed our 65th wedding anniversary on March 5th. I still have one living sibling in Columbus, Janet Wilkes. Janet was in the Bexley school system until 1950 when Mom & Dad decided to move to Florida. Every time I sit down to type a letter I think of my Bexley HS typing teacher; and now I have forgotten her name, but I haven’t forgotten how to type. The memory of the keyboard remains in my brain. It just amazes me!!!
We have a soon to be 18 year old Greatgrandson that is graduating HS. It seems unfair to deny the graduates the ceremony of High School Graduation, but the alternative is to expose yourself to a pretty bad virus. Perhaps this will make them stronger in some future situation?  Would love to hear from classmates – this would be our 70th reunion.
